Aims and Definitions

Environmental quality is degraded by urban growth, industrial development, increase of transportation facilities, and higher traffic volume among many other facts. This matter cannot be neglected because degradation of the environment means the failure to create a suitable and congenial environment for living.

Obviously, Dubai Municipality has and will continuously implement the latest available technologies to protect the environment.

The main aim of thematic maps project is to use the combined technology of GIS and Remote Sensing associated with some necessary field works, analyzed by a specialized and qualified group of scientists, for assisting the management, planners, and other decision making authorities, by providing an up-to-date environmental digital dynamic thematic maps, along with conservational and protecting solution as much as setting a monitoring methodology and work flow which can be handled by GIS Center.

This project is meant to utilize the tools of GIS and Remote Sensing for creating environmental and general purpose, GIS scientific digital maps and reports (Modeled Dynamic GIS Digital Thematic Maps) for the Emirate of Dubai, based on studies and investigations of environmental issues using remote sensing and GIS techniques. Remote sensing data combined with other collected data and information provided by scientists and specialized organizations are, interpreted, classified, rendered attributed, ruled and stored in a geodatabase.

Project Area

The area of the project covers the Emirate of Dubai, the extents of which are determined by the administrative boundaries. The project area also includes a buffer around the border, the width of which shall depend on the theme in focus.

Project Themes

Scientific digital themes are to be created to cover different concerned environmental topics for the Emirate of Dubai. The following is a suggested guideline of the required themes and sub themes. More themes are expected to innovated and proposed.

  • Monitoring Waste generation sources and Waste disposal sites of both hazardous and non hazardous waste.
  • Ground Water Resource Monitoring and Identification of Toxic Pollutants.
  • Coastal Zone Monitoring and Mapping.
  • Marine and Surface Water Pollution and Water quality Monitoring.
  • Identification of Important Biodiversity Areas and their conservation.
  • Monitoring Coral Reefs and Marine Life Habitats.
  • Monitoring sand movements, land degradation and desertification.
  • Leaking Sub Surface Oil and Gas, and Oil Spill Monitoring.
  • Air Quality Assessment and Monitoring.

Involved Departments

Thematic maps project will require cooperation with almost all of DM departments. Possible involved departments are:

  • Environment Department.
  • Drainage and Irrigation Department.
  • Costal Management section/ Marine Unit.
