Dubai GIS Center participated successfully in Kuwait’s 1st International Geographic Information Systems Conference & Exhibition. Er. Mohammed AlZaffin - Director of Dubai GIS Center - presented a paper on “Establishment of a National GIS Center, Dubai Experience”.
In his paper he introduced Dubai Municipality and the history of GIS Center covering important decision to take toward a National GIS Center. Dubai Municipality established the Dubai GIS Center in February 2001, with the goal of creating a central repository of geographic information of the Emirate of Dubai that would provide spatial data and GIS related services to departments of Dubai Municipality, other government organizations of the Emirate and the private sector. The Center's mandate, as the sole official source of certain geographic information and services, is defined in Law No. (6) of 2001 issued by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai.
Then Er. Al-Zaffin spoke about Applicability of GIS to Dubai Government needs, Steps for Implementation of establishing a GIS center, Standards, and Examples on on-line integration of GIS data and services.
Finally he concluded his paper with the important aspects that have been covered by the GIS Center in Dubai Municipality such as: Organization, Mandate, Infrastructures, data, Applications and Staff & Training.
