GIS Corporate Database
As the name implies, the corporate GIS database is a geographic data resource for the Emirate of Dubai. Corporate Database can be explained in simple terms by taking the example of a grocery store. The customer goes to one place (the grocery store) to get all ingredients for making a meal instead of going to each specialty store (meat store, poultry store, bakery etc.). The grocery store is like a corporate database and the individual specialty store is like a department with its own specialized data.
When the customer has got his/her grocery the customer can prepare many different meals from the same ingredients. The customer needs different recipes to make different types of meals. Similarly a corporate database user can get all the spatial data he/she requires from the corporate database and use different applications to produce different results from the same data. The applications enable users to integrate and analyze data of various departments. The pillars for the GIS Center Enterprise GIS are the corporate database of geographic data and the Web-GIS applications that make this data available to those who are authorized to access it. This corporate database is a seamless database of structured spatial data, consisting of vector, raster, attribute and other associated data. The database uses ORACLE and ESRI’s ArcSDE technologies, and Web-GIS applications use ORION’s OnPoint technology. Security of data access is a key consideration at the GIS Center. While the corporate GIS database is rich in content, users get access only to data that they are authorized to access. The corporate GIS database contains data that is:
- Shared by all GIS users
- Accessed by internal GIS applications
- Accessed by external applications and customers
The benefits of a corporate GIS database are firstly, all users have immediate and easy access to up-to-date information, and secondly, that the construction of the database is done in the most efficient manner possible. The corporate database eliminates redundant collection and storage of data and keeping extra copies of data by individual users.
